7 Tips for Moving Out and Across the Country on Your Own

Moving out on your own for the first time can be scary. Moving across the country can be even scarier! However, there are lots of great tips out there from people who have made similar moves before. Whether you’re moving to the West Coast or leaving San Francisco to strike out on your own several states away, here are seven helpful ways to manage your move and moving-related anxiety.

1. Stay in Touch

We’re lucky to have Facebook, Skype, and other social media available to us today. In the past, moving away on your own meant occasional long-distance phone calls and letters. Now, you can stay in touch with friends and family from wherever you are. If you don’t have Wi-Fi set up at your house yet, head to a nearby café or coffee shop. It’s a good way to both get out of the house and into your new community as well as staying in touch. Tip: Don’t let social media engulf your life; it’s hard to participate in your new home when you’re still mentally living in your last one. Instead, use social sites like MeetUp to find new friends in your new hometown.

2. Get Out There

As nice as it is to stay in touch with people back home, if you don’t get out there, you’re going to feel very lonely in your new place. Join a local club or get involved in activities that interest you in your new location; you’ll find you start making friends!

3. Getting There

For some people, a long road trip is just the ticket to feeling like they’ve left their old life behind and they’re starting a new chapter. If you want to bring a lot of your stuff along with you, this is the best way to go. However, if you really want to start afresh, a flight to your new destination will let you arrive in style.

4. Apartment Hunting

It’s a good idea to check what landlords need in your new location before you go. You might be from a small town where your word is enough to rent a place, but many larger cities require credit checks and references. Prepare all of this in a folder for any place you think you might want to rent.

5. Orientation

Once you arrive in your new city, check out all the ways to get around town. Is there a subway? Reliable bus service? Maybe even a train? If you know something about the lay of the land, it can make the move a lot less intimidating.

6. Fun

Find out what kind of fun activities are available in your new home. Do you like concerts? Movies? Museums? If you can find out what’s going on in the area, you’ll find that you’re less bored, and you may even meet some new friends.

7. Work

Maybe you’re moving for work, or for school, or because you just need a change of pace. If you’re looking for a job, start with recruitment agencies. They can often find you work right away. It may not be your dream job, but it’s a paycheck that will help you get on your feet in your new city in no time.
